Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary area of study that tries to understand the link between brain and mind. The course will run over two semesters. During the first week of the first semester a series of Cognitive Science Overview seminars will be held to introduce you to Cognitive Science and serve as a foundation for subsequent topics. The course will then follow a Semester-by-Semester plan. The first semester will use a traditional, parallel study-units structure to provide a comprehensive introduction to theory and practical methods across a range of Cognitive Science topics. The second semester will use a series of 鈥渂lock鈥 study-units to provide more focused and detailed exposure to specific areas of research in which you are exposed to the latest trends in this highly active area.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Science in Cognitive Science - M.Sc - under the auspices of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Draw on your broad overview of research and methods across the whole field of cognitive science and your in-depth exposure to research methods in Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Psychology and Philosophy to make use of the tools and to apply the techniques used by current researchers in the field.
  • Identify and describe the main component fields of study in Cognitive Science.
  • Identify and describe the main techniques and tools used in Cognitive Science research.
  • Identify and describe the gross anatomy of the brain and how different structures may relate to cognitive functions.

The programme provides a strong interdisciplinary background in understanding the brain, human cognition, and behaviour which is excellent preparation for careers dealing with neuromarketing, user experience (UX), user interface (UI), data science, human factors, behavioural analyses, human resources, rehabilitation, education and communications.

You may choose to further your education by writing a Masters鈥 level dissertation, or enrol in an alternative postgraduate course that will allow you to use your transferable skills and knowledge for a more holistic education.
